Sacred Faces of Christ * Holy Faces of Christ
What makes an image a sacred image? What makes an image a "Holy Face"? Let's see......
To be sacred means pertaining to that which is holy or divine, avoiding what is secular such that it is universally associated with that which is holy. It is worthy of religious veneration and respect and set apart being dedicated for the worship of God. (Latin sacrare, to set apart as sacred, consecrate.)
So obviously to be a "Holy Face" it has to contain a sacred portrayal of God's Face, His "Holy Face". The traditional term, "Holy Face of Jesus" is a title specific only to certain images of which the original image was of miraculous a nature, meaning that it was not formed by human hands. A few examples are the Holy Face from the Shroud of Turin, the Holy Face of St. Veronica's Veil, and the Holy Face of Manopello.
There is another category of sacred images which were painted in order to recreate the likeness of our Lord as He appeared to someone. These are miraculously inspired. Two examples are the Sacred Heart image from the apparition of our Lord to St. Margaret Mary and the Divine Mercy Image painted as requested by Jesus when He appeared to St. Faustina.
